Description: The Hinoki Falsecypress is one of the finer evergreens, valued for its spire-shaped form, fine-textured foliage, and interesting reddish bark that is almost fibrous. This tree becomes very tall and makes a striking architectural statement in the landscape.

 

Ornamental Features:

  • Form: Distinctively pyramidal habit of growth.

  • Foliage: Dark green evergreen foliage. The scale-like sprays of foliage remain dark green throughout the winter.

  • Bark: Shaggy antique red bark adds an interesting dimension to the landscape.

 

Landscape Attributes:

  • Evergreen tree with a strong central leader and a distinctive, refined pyramidal form.

  • Average texture that blends into the landscape but can be balanced by one or two finer or coarser trees or shrubs for an effective composition.

  • Low-maintenance tree; when pruning is necessary, it is recommended to only trim back the new growth of the current season, other than to remove any dieback.

  • No significant negative characteristics.

  • Grows to about 50 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 20 feet.

  • Low canopy with a typical clearance of 4 feet from the ground, making it unsuitable for planting under power lines.

  • Grows at a medium rate and can live for 70 years or more under ideal conditions.

  • Thrives in full sun to partial shade.

  • Prefers average to moist conditions and should not be allowed to dry out. May require supplemental watering during periods of drought or extended heat.

  • Not particular about soil type or pH.

  • Highly tolerant of urban pollution and will thrive in inner-city environments.

  • Will benefit from being planted in a relatively sheltered location.

  • Consider applying a thick mulch around the root zone in winter to protect it in exposed locations or colder microclimates.

  • This species is not originally from North America.
